QUETTA: The final phase of local bodies elections in Balochistan has ended amid tight security measures.
According to the unofficial results, Dr Qaleemullah of PkMAP has been elected Mayor Quetta Metropolitan Corporation and Mohammad Yunus of PML-N Deputy Mayor Quetta Municipal Corporation while the seats of Chairman and Deputy Chairman District Councils Quetta were secured by Naeem Bazai and Asmat Bazai respectively. All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDA) and Watan Dost Jamhori Panel announced their candidates for the offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Quetta Metropolitan Corporation and Chairman and Vice Chairman, District Council Quetta, respectively.
Earlier, the oath taking of all the elected councillors against special women farmers, Labourers and minorities under section 28 of Balochistan Local Government Act 2010 and Rule 56 Balochistan Local government Election Rules 2013 was held at Metropolitan Corporation hall. Following the oath taking the returning officer scrutinized the nomination papers and as many as 86 out of 87 members cast their votes for Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen. Dr Qaleemullah secured 54 votes for Mayor and Mohammad Yunus got 56 votes, as per unofficial notification. Strict arrangements were made during the final phase of LG polls, however no incident of violence was reported.
Election of Chairman, Deputy Chairman District council and Mayor and Deputy Mayor were postponed. Election commission should give new schedule for these elections. Oath taking ceremony was delayed. Till 4 pm there was not two third majority and election of Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Mayor and Deputy Mayor were posted postponed. Deputy Commissioner Killa Abdullah District Muhammad Naeem Bazai told that a letter has been written to Election Commission for early issuing new schedule for these elections. PkMAP and All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDA) had earlier this month won equal seats reserved for peasants and labourers in local bodies elections of Quetta Metropolitan Corporation and District Council Quetta. Total seats reserved for peasants and labourers in Quetta Metropolitan Corporation were six in number.
