The face-off

Sunday, June 09, 2013  From Print Edition

The new chief minister of Balochistan – Dr Abdul Malik – will have to face another doctor of his province – Dr Allah Nazar – who is said to be leading the Balochistan Liberation Front. Like Dr Malik, Dr Nazar also belongs to the middle class and enjoys a huge following among the educated Baloch, especially the youth.

Both Dr Allah Nazar and Dr Malik got their MBBS degrees from the same institution – the Bolan Medical College – and perhaps they know each other personally. Both started politics from a common platform: the Baloch Students Organisation. Will the new CM come out victorious in the face-off between the two doctors?

The elections have got the state machinery running in Balochistan. But the question is: will the major stakeholders – the establishment and the Baloch militant groups – change their stances and policies? Look at the chequered history of the imbroglio, the answer would be negative. The nomination of Dr Abdul Malik Baloch as chief minister, instead of the PML-N’s provincial chief Sardar Sanaullah Zehri or Nawabzada Changaiz Marri, is a welcome move. However, it will be foolish to expect that the Baloch separatists can be persuaded into holding talks with the government.

However, Dr Malik can win the Baloch people’s hearts with good governance and development. His government should put a strict check on rampant corruption that had reached alarmingly high levels during the previous government’s rule. There should be an effective, autonomous body for accountability. The discretionary funds of MPAs must be spent on development of health-care and education sectors.
